The Wimsen Cave near Heyingen is the only show cave in Germany that can be navigated by a small boat at about 80 meters. It now shines in a completely new light. The new LED lighting creates a particularly impressive atmosphere here: professional lighting has been installed at over 40 lighting points, mostly underwater, which enables completely new insights into this unique show cave. Daniel Tress, the operator of the Wimsen Cave and the organic restaurant there, is extremely enthusiastic: “We have created a milestone in the history of this show cave here.

The underwater light design in particular is impressive and I hadn’t thought possible in this way. My special thanks go to Oliver Heil from the Cave Lighting Team and the cave divers of the cave research group Ostalb-Kirchheim e.V., Mathias Lyk and Katharina Birger, who came to the project through the mediation of Rainer Straub and made such great underwater lighting possible. I was also impressed that everything was installed within a week, as promised by the Cave Lighting Team, despite the difficult installation environment, so that we were on time on 1.4. could start into the new season. The consistently positive feedback from the first visitors speaks for itself! ”.

A new era has also dawned for the Schertels cave in the Alb-Donau district on the Laichinger Alb near Westerheim, and it invites visitors to admire the cave in a new light. After five years of planning, in 2016 they had nailed their heads and the project was realized. Under the supervision of the Cave Lighting Team with Leonid Batiuzhenko and the active help of members of the local cave association, the show cave could now be equipped with new LED technology and completely renovated. Bernhard Walter from the Höhlenverein Westerheim e.V. reports: “There were a few reasons that spoke in favor of renewing the lighting. The old light bulbs caused a lot of heat and produced lamp flora that had to be removed regularly. In addition, the light bulbs became more and more expensive to buy. We therefore decided to switch to LED and use the proven Cave Lighting System. All electrical cables have been laid discreetly and interference with the sensitive cave system avoided as far as possible. “Tobias Brammer from the office of the biosphere reserve praised the new cave lighting:” Everyone who saw the newly lit cave on the opening day was thrilled. Especially those who still knew the cave lighting with conventional light bulbs were amazed at the new insights and views. “The number of wintering bats also increased in the first winter after the change.

Both projects show that ecological and economic operation of a show cave does not have to contradict itself. And with the new Cave Lighting LED technology, both show caves look into the future in a sustainable and positive way!
